Membership at the Southern Illawarra Men’s Shed (SIMS)
SIMS welcomes men of all ages above 18 years of age, subject to their application being reviewed and approved by the Management Committee. Most members are elderly, retired and able bodied so the age profile of current members should be taken into account should younger men consider joining. The operating hours favour retired people, as the Shed is open on Tuesdays to Thursdays during business hours, and not on weekends or public holidays.
While the Shed has some members with disabilities, regrettably it is not possible to accept any more applications at this time. SIMS is not a registered NDIA support provider, nor are its members trained to support disabled people in what is basically a dangerous environment, with sophisticated woodworking and metalworking machinery continually in use. With limited space, and a daily cap on attendance, it is also not possible to allow support workers to accompany NDIS participants.
It is not an environment suitable for the frail elderly, because of the hazards described.
Apart from active membership whereby members carry out personal and joint projects on the machinery, SIMS also offers social membership (at a much lower cost), so that men can drop in for a cup of tea or coffee and a chat, to enjoy fellowship and hopefully make new friends.
